THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF A PICK-UP GAME

Pick-up basketball is a staple in NYC’s vibrant community sports scene. But whether you’re at The Cage in Greenwich Village or a local gym in Brooklyn, there are a few unwritten rules that keep the game fun, competitive, and respectful.

1. Call Your Own Fouls
No refs here—if you get fouled, call it. But remember, honesty is key. Don’t call weak fouls just to get an edge.

2. Winners Stay On
If your team wins, you earn the right to stay on the court. If you lose, wait your turn, but be ready to jump back in.

3. Respect the Run
No hogging the ball. Pass, shoot, and defend with respect for your teammates and opponents.

4. Communicate
Call out screens, picks, and switches. Good communication makes the game better for everyone.

5. Have Fun and Include Everyone
Pick-up is for all skill levels. Encourage new players, keep the vibe positive, and remember: it’s about community, not just competition.
